Yesterday afternoon, four Daesh terrorists walked in the crowded and popular southern Beirut suburb of Burj al-Barajneh. The first one blew himself up shortly before 6pm, when the place was at its busiest. To inflict maximum casualties, the second one waited until people rushed to help the wounded to detonate his explosive vest.
This second blast killed the third terrorist before he could commit his monstrous deed.
The fourth terrorist was allegedly stopped and apprehended amidst gunfire meant to disperse angry civilians seeking revenge.
I can’t begin to imagine what would have happened if all four succeeded in detonating their bombs. How many dead, how many wounded…
The death toll is already very high, more than 40 people… Reports say it may yet rise as many of the 200 wounded are in critical condition.
My thoughts today are with the victims families, and for the never-ending plight of Lebanon.
