Daech, 100 years ago: a survivor story

What Daech has been doing in Syria and Iraq is sadly not new. It has been done before, over a century ago, by the forefathers of their current sponsor: Turkey. A survivor remembers and tells her story.

Maria was 104 years old in 2015, when this video was shot. She lived, and perhaps still lives, in Yerevan, Armenia. She survived the genocide committed by the Ottoman Empire against its Armenian, Assyrian, Syriac and Chaldean population. A genocide Turkey is still refusing to recognize. A genocide that’s being carried out today by Daech, the so-called Islamic State, in Syria and Iraq, under the complaisant eye of their Turkish sponsor. Maria' story is heartbreaking and a very precious document that helps us understand where Daech's horrors came from.
