1.5 million Syrian refugees can’t be responsible for the crimes of a few

There over 1.5 million Syrian refugees in Lebanon. Some even say 2 million. Statistically, it’s logical that among such a large number of people there are a few hundred fanatics. It’s absurd to hold all refugees responsible for the actions of a few.

Besides that, whose fault is it there are so many Syrian refugees in Lebanon? Who’s responsible? Syrians? They escaped their war-torn country to wherever they could – as Lebanese did many times over the years. It’s not their fault if the Lebanese authorities let them in without proper control. It’s not their fault if Lebanese petty politics drove some parties to believe they could tip the sectarian balance or even use them against Hezbollah when need be.

It’s not their fault if some Lebanese pseudo-intellectuals screamed racism! every time anyone warned of the problems to come. It’s not their fault if many Lebanese populists denied the fact that Daech was indeed present in Lebanon. It’s not their fault if Lebanon has no proper government and functioning institutions. It’s not their fault if the Lebanese army is under equipped. It’s not their fault if all the money that could have gone to the army and security forces ended up inside politicians pockets.

It’s not their fault, it’s ours.

What did we do when the authorities let them in without control? What did we do when politicians conspired to use them? What did we do when many screamed racism and lied about Daech’s presence in Lebanon? What did we do when Lebanese TV channels turned Nosra terrorists into heroes when they released the kidnapped soldiers?

The Syrian refugees problem in Lebanon was homemade. If you want to fix it, don’t taking it with the refugees, the solution is Lebanese.
